Telluride, Colorado

Nestled high in the mountains of Colorado, south of Montrose and southwest of Ouray, Telluride is one of the most popular ski areas in all of Colorado, rivaling Aspen as a destination for winter sports enthusiasts. It’s a year-round tourist destination with a number of town festivals scheduled each summer, as well as plentiful hiking and mountain biking trails, river rafting, and wildlife spotting and sightseeing.

The town is a former silver mining camp, and currently has a permanent population of 2,325, as of the 2010 census. Median income was $51,938 for households, and about 8.5% of families live below the poverty line.

Most individuals who live in Telluride are employed in the service and tourist industries, as this is the primary economic force in the town.

Free public transit is provided within the town, and it is connected to other Colorado highways by State Highway 145, part of the San Juan Skyway, which connects to State Highway 62. There are two alternate mountain passes to enter the town, known as Imogene Pass and Black Bear Pass, both of which require a high clearance or 4×4 vehicle.

The climate is mild in the summer and cold in the winter due to the high elevation, and winter precipitation is heavy, with an average of about 10 snowy days each month from December-March. Schooling is provided by the Telluride School District, which provides K-12 schooling for all residents.
